While we very rarely change the actual food, we do adjust the quantity well in advance of the hunt, so that the dog&#8217;s ready to receive the what it&#8217;ll need out in the field. The day before the hunt starts, we\u2019re generous with water. In our experience, dogs like dry food best when it&#8217;s not soaked. Plenty of water and food served straight away: this sharpens the appetite and it\u2019s good for the teeth.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s also important to remember that the dog must have sufficient time to recuperate. When the hunting party\u2019s &#8220;social downtime&#8221; extends into the wee small hours, make sure the dog has the peace and quiet it needs.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"wp-block-uagb-section uagb-section__wrap uagb-section__background-undefined uagb-block-b9670f80 user-profile-block style-border before-desert\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-section__overlay\"><\/div>\r\n<div class=\"uagb-section__inner-wrap\">\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full floating-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"wp-image-2716\" src=\"https:\/\/asnes-academy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/CristerNC3A6ss_Circque-150x150-3.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"hot-tip\" class=\"has-desert-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">HOT TIP<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-desert-color has-text-color\">\r\n<em>I tea<\/em><i>ch my dogs to eat when they\u2019re served food, not when they want to eat. This can be done from a young age. Don\u2019t leave food out \u2013 give it to your dogs for about 30 minutes, then take it away.<\/i><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-desert-color has-text-color\"><em>As someone who&#8217;s worked with dogs in service, both on hikes and in more operational settings, this has proved to be very practical. I know that the dog always eats when he\u2019s served his food (preferably twice a day) or when it needs a little top-up.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"wp-block-uagb-section uagb-section__wrap uagb-section__background-undefined uagb-block-9b14169f\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-section__overlay\"><\/div>\r\n<div class=\"uagb-section__inner-wrap\">\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nCrister N\u00e6ss\r\n<em>Crister was a dog handler in the Norwegian Armed Forces. He works as a dog handler, and is owner and consultant of the company Fluent Dawg \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FluentDawg\">Fluent Dawg \u2013 Dogtraining and Workingdogs<\/a>.<\/em>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"riktig-mat-til-aktive-hunder-pa-jakt\">The right food for hunting dogs<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFor dogs, hunting is expensive, energy-wise. In order to perform, it needs the best food. The dog\u2019s short digestive system and teeth tell us that this animal does best on a diet of raw animal products. These are the main ingredient in recognized feeds. A nutritious and balanced diet of good quality food is important for both humans and animals.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nRead up on the nutritional content of your feed. Choose high-energy feed and start with a gradual transition in good time. They tell you a lot about your dog\u2019s wellbeing! The faeces should be relatively dry and not over-abundant. Another thing that goes without saying is that feeding with dinner leftovers, scraps of bread and the like isn\u2019t going to cut it. That\u2019s not to say that your dog can&#8217;t have the leftover meatloaf as a nibble \u2013 just that leftovers mustn\u2019t fill up too much of the stomach.\r\n\r\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fuglehundskole.no\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lesja og Dovre Fuglehundskole<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"riktig-naering-oker-hundens-prestasjonsevne\"><strong>Proper nutrition improves the dog&#8217;s performance<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px;\">The dog\u2019s metabolism is optimally tuned to absorb protein and fat from meat. <strong>When the dog\u2019s active, fat is the most important source of energy<\/strong>. If your dog has \u201ca few grams spare\u201d when the hunt begins, you\u2019re likely to find it getting slimmer every day. In other words, the dog\u2019s expending more energy than it consumes. So having a little some reserves of fat is maybe an advantage.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Dogs are famously good at sourcing the energy they need from the body. If there\u2019s an energy deficit in their feed, they draw on their stored fat reserves. High-quality protein will also increase the transport of oxygen to the muscles and support healthy muscles. A good feed will also contain natural fibre (helpful for the intestinal environment), glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate (for healthy joints and synovial fluid) and omega 3 fatty acids (to support a sense of smell.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"foringsrutiner-en-vanlig-jaktdag\"><strong>Feeding routines for a hunting dog\r\n<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-icon-list uagb-icon-list__outer-wrap uagb-icon-list__layout-vertical uagb-block-3de7e19d list-bullets\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__wrap\">\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-icon-list-child uagb-icon-list-repeater uagb-icon-list__wrapper uagb-block-7b918cb9\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__content-wrap\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__label-wrap\">Introduce feeding routines five to six weeks in advance of the hunt. If you avoid changing routines, you reduce stress.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-icon-list-child uagb-icon-list-repeater uagb-icon-list__wrapper uagb-block-604e155d\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__content-wrap\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__label-wrap\">\r\n\r\nMake sure the dog has the peace and quiet it needs to rest\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-icon-list-child uagb-icon-list-repeater uagb-icon-list__wrapper uagb-block-0b396ffa\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__content-wrap\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__label-wrap\"><span class=\"uagb-icon-list__label\">Feed the dog as soon as you wake up with its routine portion. Add plenty of water and preferably some wet food if the dog is used to it.<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-icon-list-child uagb-icon-list-repeater uagb-icon-list__wrapper uagb-block-16311a9f\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__content-wrap\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__label-wrap\">Bring two or three lunch boxes out into the mountains for feeding during longer breaks. Feel free to mix it with water.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-icon-list-child uagb-icon-list-repeater uagb-icon-list__wrapper uagb-block-a7899bd3\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__content-wrap\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__label-wrap\"><span class=\"uagb-icon-list__label\">If the dog\u2019s not great at drinking in the mountains, you have to teach it to drink from a bottle \u2013 this might take \u201cforced\u201d drinking, so be careful not to to \u201cdrown\u201d your dog. This is very important in winter, where access to water can be difficult. We usually say that when the dog starts eating snow, it&#8217;s \u201cgame over\u201d. At this point, they\u2019re on the verge of dehydration, and their performance will suffer greatly. It is possible to make water more desirable \u2013 mix in a can of liver pat\u00e9, a teaspoon of milk, or something like that.<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-icon-list-child uagb-icon-list-repeater uagb-icon-list__wrapper uagb-block-c0d68c68\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__content-wrap\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__label-wrap\"><span class=\"uagb-icon-list__label\">After the hunt and before the journey home, the dog should be given a handful of dry food before entering the resting phase. Rest is more important than food in this phase \u2013 but a little nutrition helps recovery get the best start.<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-icon-list-child uagb-icon-list-repeater uagb-icon-list__wrapper uagb-block-6ad61a84\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__content-wrap\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__label-wrap\"><span class=\"uagb-icon-list__label\">One to two hours after the hunt, feed your dog a large meal \u2013 about as much as you think it can manage.<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nMake sure that there\u2019s no stress, fuss or getting ready to go when the dog\u2019s about to eat. Keep everything calm before and after meal time.
