There\u2019s no definitive answer. Below we\u2019ve listed some suggestions for a light kit. If there are thing you\u2019d prefer to take, feel free to remix the list. But we reckon that these are a pretty good collection of basics to solve many problems.\r\n\r\nAnd remember \u2013 usually, you just need to fix the problem enough to get home. Then you can do a more thorough job with the tools you have there.\r\n\r\nOne quick headline before we get started \u2013 make sure you know how to disassemble the pump for your burner, if you have one. Problems with burners are pretty common and usually happen when you\u2019re tired and hungry \u2013 that is, when it\u2019s time to actually use them. maintained and given some love on a regular basis or they malfunction. Cursing a broken burner is virtually a rite of passage for Norwegians doing military service!\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>The things that most often break on a burner are:<\/strong>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-icon-list uagb-icon-list__outer-wrap uagb-icon-list__layout-vertical uagb-block-dc6e20e7 list-bullets\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__wrap\">\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-icon-list-child uagb-icon-list-repeater uagb-icon-list__wrapper uagb-block-a00b56b6\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__content-wrap\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__label-wrap\">The pump and gaskets on multi-fuel burners<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-icon-list-child uagb-icon-list-repeater uagb-icon-list__wrapper uagb-block-ed731b88\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__content-wrap\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__label-wrap\">Soot and combustion residue \u2013 this always causes trouble<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-icon-list-child uagb-icon-list-repeater uagb-icon-list__wrapper uagb-block-581ba29a\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__content-wrap\">\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<div class=\"uagb-icon-list__label-wrap\">The needle valve controlling supply at the burner head<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nHere\u2019s a brief instructional video on maintenance and repair:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=O1WSGFBq-FI&amp;t=5s<\/div><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bindinger-og-trinser\"><strong>Bindings<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nLoose bindings\u00a0should be re-screwed tight. If the screws are broken, you must get the right screws for your bindings from a sports shop. While binding failures are rare, screws are light, and it\u2019s wise to take some.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSeal old holes with epoxy, PU-glue or the right plugs. If you have a binding that doesn\u2019t sit correctly and you need new holes, these should be drilled 1.5\u20132cm in front of or behind the old holes (which must be sealed). Remember to fill the holes with the correct glue before screwing the binding back on.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kCwzmguWFqk<\/div><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>Grips and baskets<\/strong> for ski poles can be easily bought from sports shops or from suppliers. Many handles can be easily removed by soaking them in hot water for a minute or two.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIf the basket\u2019s damaged while in you\u2019re in the field, you\u2019ll be glad you bought a spare. They\u2019re pretty easily bought in most sport shops (in Norway, anyway). But if the worst happens and you don\u2019t have a spare you can make an improvised one out of almost anything. A Coke can. Gaffa tape. A small wooden board. A basket essentially acts to stop your pole from going too deep into the snow. On longer trips, a basket\u2019s considered an essential spare.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"brukket-ski-eller-skistav\">Broken skis or ski poles<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nShould you be unlucky enough to<strong> break a ski tip<\/strong>, you\u2019ll need to improvise a solution until you get home. Your ski\u2019s not really skiable. It\u2019ll dig into the snow.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAssuming your tip\u2019s still attached, you can drill a hole in the tip of the ski, thread a cord through it, and bend the tip back up. After this, you can fasten the cord around or in the binding.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIf the tip\u2019s broken off, you can screw in some splints and bodge it to get you home. Don\u2019t over-worry about new screw holes: they\u2019re the least of your problems. Whatever happens, the most important thing is to bend the forward section of the ski so that it doesn\u2019t dig in. Here you just have to be creative.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>If you break a ski completely<\/strong> \u2013 that\u2019s an issue. When this happens, it\u2019s just a matter of getting from A to B somehow.\r\n\r\nSkis mostly break at the tip, in the middle or just behind the binding. Breaks in other places are pretty unusual. If you have sufficient real estate on your ski, you might try to move the binding so that you get a very short ski. Otherwise consider splinting the ski. You only need a short-term solution. You&#8217;re going to need new skis.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>Poles\u00a0<\/strong>can be repaired in many ways. The easiest way is to splint it with a pipe clamp and tape. You can compress one pole at the break with pliers, force it into the other, and give the join a squeeze. You can buy repair kits, which are usually sections of halp-pipe and a clamp. If can\u2019t splint your pole, then improvise. Find a stick or something (hopefully you&#8217;re not on windswept open tundra).\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ytterbekledning\">Outer clothes<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIf you <strong>puncture the membrane of your Gore-Tex shell<\/strong>, it needs to be patched and glued from both sides. You can use Stormsure tape, glue (joint glue) or Tear-Aid. Best of all is a Gore-Tex patch with glue in the same colour as the jacket or trousers. Most specialist shops that sell decent Gore-Tex shells will be able to take it in and send it somewhere for a good fix. You can also take care of this for yourself with the help of your local<a href=\"http:\/\/goretexservice.no\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0Gore-Tex Service.<\/a>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>Don\u2019t use gaffa\/ duct tape<\/strong> on clothing unless you really have to. It\u2019s the stickiest substance in the cosmos (up there with klister) and the glue\u2019s a real pain to remove. This may make it impossible to return your item if you have a warranty on it.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"glidelaser\">Zips<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nZip fasteners are one of those things you take for granted until they break. Zips on hiking clothes, rucksacks and sleeping bags get a lot of use. The most important thing you can do to extend the life of your zip is to keep it clean. Zips become especially slow if they are repeatedly exposed to salt water without being rinsed clean.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIn the vast majority of cases, it\u2019s fabric or thread wedged into the zipper causing it to lock. If you can\u2019t remove this easily, you can try using <strong>dish soap, dry bicycle lube, vaseline<\/strong> or <strong>something<\/strong> to loosen it.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nOften, the slider won\u2019t mesh the teeth. If teeth are missing, the zipper\u2019s broken. But if the main problem is that the zip doesn\u2019t close properly, then it\u2019s usually that the slider\u2019s worn out. <strong>You can often carefully compress the slider with a pair of pliers.<\/strong> This is a game changer, especially when you\u2019re out in the wilds \u2013 but possibly only a temporary fix.
