How do you choose a good route?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nBetween them, our panel of experts<\/a>\u00a0 have incomparable experience in skiing, climbing high mountains, hiking and conducting expeditions. When you\u2019ve been doing this for a while, you learn a trick or two.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nVWe\u2019re passionate about sharing knowledge \u2013 passing on the knowledge and the tools other need for enjoying the mountains as safely possible, and to learn even more for themselves. That\u2019s what the \u00c5snes Academy<\/a> was founded for.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSeven free tips, then, to find a safe route up the mountain.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Planning a little expedition and a photoshoot, we download topographical maps and satellite images of the mountains and the area to our phones.\r\nSince we haven\u2019t been in the area we\u2019re going to before, we want to be sure that the routes are passable. We\u2019ll also have some good backup plans in case we don\u2019t find the conditions we expected. We simply want to be confident that we have several sensible choices of route\u2026\r\nStudying the map, planning and looking for routes, is an art we all value highly. For us, it\u2019s an important part of the expedition and a fun art to practice in its own right. The goal is, of course, to get to the goal in a safe way and have the strength to get back down. Before the tour<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nTo make this article a little easier to digest, we\u2019ve divided the information into two parts. One has tips for the work before the tour; the other has tips related to the tour itself and what you do along the way.\r\n\r\nThe key is to do your homework. That\u2019s the first priority.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Planinng<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWhile nothing in the world is as good as actually skiing, planning to go skiing is not bad \u2013 inspirational, often social. Planning is where experiences are forged. Planning is also more than sensible: it makes the experience safer. Leaving a mountain in a rescue helicopter is not an experience anyone should want.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

A reasonable gradient with a good, gradual runout for an avalanche to disperse.<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Simple lines with an even ascent \u2013 around 18\u00b0 is a decent place to start.<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Changes of direction, switches and kick-turns can be performed in the best possible place: often right next to a tree (under the tree line) or where it\u2019s a little flatter.<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Routes that follow a ridge or ascend through dense forest are usually safer than traverses or open trees.<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Signs of scary route<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Convex terrain; a slope that bulges outwards. Imagine a salad bowl sitting upside down against the wall, with snow on top: the snow has little support and is therefore always in danger of slipping off.<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n \r\n
In general, tracks going into or through terrain traps<\/a>: gullies, narrow chutes; a stream valley, a cliff, a crevasse field.<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Watch out for anything that might fall on your head: overhanging scree, rock and ice. If it misses you, a fall can trigger an avalanche.<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Use GPS, map and compass<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWe\u2019re blessed with aids, apps and gadgets these days. You can track your route with a watch or an app. Many apps and route-planners also have \u201cheatmaps\u201d that show the most-used routes, too.\r\n\r\nIf you track yourself on the way up, you have an excellent and (presumably) safe alternative on the way back down if there\u2019s a full whiteout or poor visibility. You just back-track. This is very, very convenient \u2013 it\u2019s saved us many times. You can also save the GPX file to share the route with your friends, or just save it for the next trip. Practical, nein?\r\n\r\nBut remember. Anything that runs on a battery can run out of power. Take a map, compass, and an extra battery. Don\u2019t trust in a smart watch or iPhone that conks out as the thermometer approaches 0\u00b0. Definitely do not be the one to put your five-year-old smart phone in your armpit \u201cto warm up the battery”.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Get technical\u2026<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nDownload the Norgeskart app<\/a>\u00a0and the RegObs app<\/a>. These let you download maps you can use without reception, create map sections with routes, and use the gradient map from NVE. And they offer a lot of good information for planning and touring. The steepness map in the RegObs app gives you your position and full overview of the gradient and terrain around you (you do need coverage though).\u00a0If you\u2019re in Norway, don\u2019t forget the 113 app. If you have to notify the emergency services, they\u2019ll have your position.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Wake up, sheeple!<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAs tempting as it us to follow random ski tracks up into the clouds \u2013 look around; observe; use your senses. Resist the urge to sheep it. Think; make decisions about where you\u2019re going, based on where you are, all the time. Sensors on! Without them, it’s hard to see danger signs and red flags<\/a>. Don\u2019t rely on others to see them for you. Be vigilant yourself. If you see, or sense, danger \u2013 say so.\r\n\r\nIn many cases, ski tracks can be convenient. It\u2019s tempting to follow them, especially in deep snow. But this isn\u2019t always wise. So think. Snow changes from hour to hour \u2013 so adapt your route to changes to snow and conditions if you have to.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Good communication \u2013 good friends listen and work together<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nGood communication and openness in the tour group is completely mandatory. It\u2019s important that everyone speaks up: consensus isn\u2019t worth anything without actual agreement. Good friends listen when someone has misgivings. Keep a pace that\u2019s good for your crew. Take into account the whole group\u2019s strengths and weaknesses. Tailor the tour to your skill levels and physicality.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Follow your heart and your gut<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFollow your heart: maintain a constant heart rhythm for the entire ascent. You don\u2019t want the way up to become an unintended interval session draining you of the energy you\u2019d rather have for laughing in joy and\/or rescuing yourself from hilarious wipeouts on the way back down. A nice, smooth, rise at a reasonable 10\u00b0\u201320\u00b0 is really what you want. Keep it flowing; keep your pulse ticking away nicely.\r\n\r\nSpeaking of essential organs: listen to your gut. If your instincts say something\u2019s not right, say so. Discuss it. Apart from anything, it\u2019s better to get it out.\u00a0You can train your intuition. It takes time spent in the mountains. If you\u2019ve got a well-trained gut, do listen to it if it tell you it\u2019s time to reconsider something \u2013 and maybe even turn around.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Not too steep<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFinally: choose the perfect slope. The ideal route minimises the linear distance without making the trail too steep. If you\u2019re sleeping, or your skins aren\u2019t gripping enough, or you\u2019re climbing with your heel bars high all the time \u2013 you\u2019re wasting energy.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
